Virgin Mary of protection – Virgin Mary with Veil cross icon

The Church has always celebrated the Most Holy Mother of God as the patron and protector of Christians, who with her prayers appeases God to sinners. She has helped individuals and nations countless times in war and peace, and everywhere in trouble. The event that the church celebrates happened on October 14, 911, while city was under a siege from “ Great Russians” when they were still not Christians in the time of Emperor Leo the Wise (Philosopher). There was an evening vigil in the Church of the Mother of God Vlaherna in Constantinople. The church was full of people, and somewhere in the background stood St. Andrew the Fool with his disciple Epiphanius. At four o’clock after midnight, St. Andrew saw the Most Holy Mother of God entered from right dors of church with the omophorion spread over the people, as if covering the people with those clothes. She was dressed in golden porphyry, and shone surrounded by apostles, saints, martyrs, and virgins. Saint Andrew pointed to Epiphanius and asked him if he also saw “the Empress and the Lady, praying for the whole world”, which Epiphanius confirmed in astonishment. The shroud of the Most Holy Mother of God is her omophorion (blanket) which she spread over the Christians – in the vision that the Venerable Andrew the Fool and his disciple had. Due to that event all people in church were protected by Veil of Virgin Mary and all people in church were safe .
